Day 134: Reinterpret your favorite childhood story.

Hannah: Wondering if people would enjoy reading The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein if the roles were reversed. When I read this book to my kiddos I always thought it seemed effed up!

Rachel: I actually can't remember many stories from my own childhood, so picking a favorite turned into a long process of searching for children's books on amazon. Anyway, when I came across The Secret Garden, I went on wikipedia to read the plot again as I can't remember it off the top of my head, and this drawing is what came to my mind...

Day 133: Make something surreal.

Hannah: There you go...my Daliesque moment.

Rachel: Really good surrealist artists do a lot better than this! I found these online and have to share: amazing surrealism

Friday, July 29, 2011

Day 132: Create something on a T-shirt and wear it for the rest of the day.

Hannah: I miss you buddy.

Rachel: No cute t-shirts on hand, so I've used a tank top and fabric pens.

Day 130: Pick a piece of music that you love (or hate) and use it fas the inspiration for today's piece.

Hannah: Strawberry Fields Forever! I love this song. I scanned a photo of a strawberry onto a Shrinky Dinks sheet and baked it and made this yummy looking necklace! I am excited about all of the possibilites...

Rachel: I am amazed that you can still find Shrinky Dinks Hannah!!! That is wonderful. I want some! I did a sort of collage...

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Day 129: Make a passport, travel poster, monetary unit, or another item for a fictional country or another planet.

Hannah: So many ideas for this project, so little time. I guess this is a monetary unit for a fictional place.

Rachel: A land inspired by some models who could only see out of one eye... I love Photoshop!

Monday, July 25, 2011

Day 128: Write a ten-word autobiography. Bonus: Illustrate it!

Hannah: It's hard to only use 10 words for anything in my opinion. I used a self-portrait I did in 2005 for a psychology class.

Rachel: Ten words about my life.

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Day 127: Take an existing postcard and alter it.

Hannah: I altered two very ordinary Montana postcards.

Rachel: Lame result from this project. Postcards do nothing for me today.

Saturday, July 23, 2011

Day 126: Make something that can fly and test it out.

Hannah: I used instructions on how to make "the best paper airplane in the world". It does fly great!

Rachel: I had this fabulous Japanese wrapping paper, received on a beautiful gift that actually came all the way from Japan, and I almost felt guilty using it and putting duct tape on it... I tried making a kite following some instructions I found on youtube. I still haven't tried it out... need a windier day.

Friday, July 22, 2011

Day 125: Only work with triangle shapes today-or make a triangle out of a bunch of stuff.

Hannah: Popcorn triangle. Just a reminder to myself that it's okay if I do something in less than a minute!

Rachel: A sort of uneven staircase, or whatever you want to see...

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Day 124: Make something seem like it is passing through a wall or other solid material.

Hannah: This door didn't stop my Tree Swallow!

Rachel: A colorful tree branch passing through the leg of our table.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Day 123: Work with or be inspired by an eggshell.

Hannah: I knew I wanted to paint something the color of a Robin's egg. I found this chairs leaning against a dumpster, I knew they would be perfect! It did take more spray paint than I thought, so I only finished one.

Rachel: Walking on eggshells...

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Day 122: Make a working musical instrument.

Hannah: I made a bell out of a clay pot and a chess piece handle. I put a glass bead for the ringer, unfortunately it doesn't sound all that great. I wanted to make something vintagey (my made up word) looking.

Rachel: this does not exactly "work" but it's a trombone made with paper towel rolls. If anyone has a hankering for making a really cool homemade instrument, this is the coolest I've ever seen: coolest homemade guitar ever

Monday, July 18, 2011

Day 121: Do something with only tinfoil today.

Rachel: Tin foil flower.

Hannah: Tinfoil two ways...1) Marker on foil, Monarch Butterfly. 2) Foil pressed on a face.

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Day 120: Make something in a box.

Hannah: Paper cut-out in a tin box. I would like to try more paper cutting.

Rachel: Since I made a fundamental mistake with the papier mache project from day 68, I was not able to remove the "mould" that I had used without cutting up the papier mache thing. So I cut it up and made this chair inside a tissue box. Painted with tempera.

Saturday, July 16, 2011

Day 119: Create an animal that has never existed before.

Hannah: Have you ever seen the pink horned bird? Well now you have!

Rachel: This is a toucat. Not very creative today!

Friday, July 15, 2011

Day 118: Make something out of wood.

Hannah: Toothpick face on wood.

Rachel: Twigs and some "wood" from a very large weed... when dry, the stalks are hollow. Interesting.

Thursday, July 14, 2011

Day 117: Travel somewhere you wouldn't normally go today specifically to create something inspired by that location.

Hannah: I took my kids to the park for inspiration for this necklace. Frogs, birds, grass, leaves, popsicles...

Rachel: I decided to practice with watercolors. I used watercolor pencils and also some interesting sparkly watercolors (for the water). This is a scene that represents a place by the sea here in my town. We went there today. I forgot to take the paints with me, so I painted it from memory after the fact. My watercolor painting skills still need a lot of practice. Not only does it take me forever, but it doesn't turn out all that great.

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Day 116: Create something using an old map or something that ends up looking like a map.

Hannah: An old tourist map of Hawaii becomes a palm tree.

Rachel: A map of the town I live in... I tried out some layering today by mixing tempera paints with glue. Experimented with the permanent marker as well.

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Monday, July 11, 2011

Day 114: Make something out of toast or bread.

Hannah: Birdie on a branch.

Rachel: A window with blackberry jam.

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Day 113: WOrk only with red materials. Try working on a red surface.

Hannah: A strawberry heart on a red piece of paper!

Rachel: I dug out a collection of red buttons. Some of them don't look so red anymore as they are very old. I sewed them onto some fabric that came off the hem of one of my all-time favorite pairs of pants that haven't fit me for 10 years or so and are no longer in my possession. Then I proceeded to sew a pouch for a cell phone, with red thread of course. Now I have to find some red rope or ribbon to string through the top.

Saturday, July 9, 2011

Day 112: Work with a few free paint swatch samples.

Hannah: Torn paint swatch art. Summer Landscape.

Rachel: Unfortunately paint stores don't give away swatch samples in Italy... kind of like how Italians don't believe in toiletpaper in the bathrooms. Apparently they're just cheap. Anyway, I cut up a piece of paper that had been painted on some time ago using watercolors. The zigzag cutting actually looks terrible, but what's done is done. It's a sort of zigzag sunset.

Friday, July 8, 2011

Day 111: Make a facial expression on your plate from the leftovers of a meal today.

Hannah: Watermelon leftover surprised face!

Rachel: Leftover corner of a mortadella sandwich turns into an upset face, which expresses how I feel about the extreme heat and humidity that has bestowed itself upon us.

Thursday, July 7, 2011

Day 110: Work with mistakes. Spill a liquid and then go from there.

Hannah: This was a lovely exploration! I spilled milk on a mirror. I realized it resembled clouds, so I photographed it reflecting the sky!

Rachel: Mine is not as pretty as Hannah's. I love the cloud! Anyway, I spilled balsamic vinegar onto my wooden cutting board and moved it around with a toothpick. I had it on my lap, so I tilted it in various directions so that it would flow here and there... it was a little like a river with subsidiaries. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I don't think it's going to stain my board because the wood has built up a little oil layer after all the pizzas that have been cut on it.
